Voewood wedding with incredible autumnal boho disco theme and artistic textured cake

Writer: ImogenImogen

With every extra word Sarah and Martin added onto the description of their Voewood wedding, I got more and more excited: Autumnal: tick. Boho: tick. Disco: tick. Put it all together, and you’ve got the best wedding theme ever: a theme I was all too glad to be bringing to life in cake form for their special day.

Dreamy Voewood wedding venue

I am always thrilled when I see an enquiry for a Voewood wedding, because it’s one of my favourite venues not only in Norfolk but in the entire world! It’s an incredible Grade II listed country house with an eclectic, incomparable aesthetic, created to celebrate the artists and artisans of the world and resulting in a venue that feels like pure magic.

Autumnal boho disco vibes

From the moment Sarah and Martin’s guests arrived at Voewood, they knew that they were in for a treat. They were greeted with a metallic, asymmetric balloon wave curling around the door, beckoning them in!

The inside of the venue was no less spectacular, either. Sarah and Martin had chosen some epic Norfolk suppliers for their Voewood wedding, including Smoke and Wildwood on styling, Array and the sensational Floral Sistas on flowers. It’s safe to say that their inspired theme was in good hands here!

To create the autumnal boho disco vibe, there were some recurring elements throughout the day: disco balls, of course, and epic dried floral arrangements including fluffy pampas grass elements and giant palm spears. The colour palette was inspired by the modern boho vibes, with a lot of terracotta, rust, sand and cream colours used throughout. The resulting effect was stunning: the type of styling that you feel is picture-perfect for instagram, but also know is meant to be lived in and enjoyed. (and oh, it was.)

Experimenting with new finishes for my textured cakes

After meeting with Sarah and Martin, I set to work thinking about how to translate their autumnal boho disco theme to an impressive cake worthy of their Voewood wedding. In the end, my inspiration came from the textures of Sarah’s bridesmaids’ dresses, which were a glorious mix of silk and velvet.

This might seem a slightly random source of inspiration for a cake, but I assure you it's not. Textured wedding cakes are my speciality, and whilst I’m mostly inspired by more industrial textures such as concrete or granite, I love to create artistic, avant-garde wedding cakes out of much more. These beautiful fabrics were a perfect starting point to get my creative juices flowing and I had great fun with Sarah and Martin’s cake. I experimented a lot with new texture effects to find the perfect one, so seeing it all come together on the day was amazing!

Overall, I made four tiers for their Voewood wedding day, three of which were arranged together in a tall cake, and one of which stood proudly on its own. On the blush and rusty terracotta coloured tiered cake, the top and bottom tier were painted with a plaster effect using chocolate ganache, which resulted in a really cool limewash effect. For the middle tier, I combined a painted silk effect and soft velvet texture to reflect the bridesmaids’ dresses. To emphasise this, I tied a raw-edged piece of silk around the middle tier, so that it cascaded down over the stand to the table beneath. To finish this cake off, I arranged a selection of stunning tonal flowers from Floral Sistas on the cake, and finally added the couples’ bespoke calligraphy cake topper.

The single tier cake was a multi-layered gluten-free design with a semi-naked buttercream finish. Decadent salted caramel dripped down the sides, whilst autumnal toned fruits such as figs and berries stood proudly on top. Like salted caramel? Check out this wedding, where among other things I created salted caramel pots for their dessert table!) Again, this cake was finished with a matching piece of soft, terracotta silk.

Unique, mouthwatering wedding cake flavours

The design of the cakes wasn’t the only thing I experimented with for Sarah and Martin’s Voewood wedding: we also wanted to develop some unique, interesting wedding flavours. The final flavours on the day were a White Chocolate, Pistachio and Passionfruit flavour, a Chocolate Orange flavour, and a Chai Tea and Caramel Apple flavour for the gluten-free cake.

In addition, Martin’s mum had provided a classic white iced fruitcake, with a pair of homemade figures as toppers. With permission, I used some more of the silk plus some leftover flowers to tie this cake in with the rest of the dessert table. Further into this Voewood wedding, a great pile of yummy Crosstown donuts was placed upon the table, as the final part of this sweet feast.

Planning a Voewood wedding?

Or perhaps you’re planning a wedding somewhere else in Norfolk and the surrounding area, and something clicked when you read the words ‘autumnal boho disco wedding’ (can’t blame you there!)? Or maybe you’ve got a totally different, but similarly epic idea for an artistic wedding cake, and you think I might be the person to bring it to life? Whichever it is, I’d love to hear from you: you can get in touch here to tell me all about your plans, and arrange a discovery call to chat all things cake.
